Reentko Dirks and Daniel Wirtz met for the first time in the year 2000 at the beginning of their studies with Prof. Thomas Fellows in Dresden and, in the same year, formed the duo “DirksundWirtz”.

Their first joint CD “DanzanonDanza” is the result of years of influence and experience of concert life which they document in the 14 pieces. The two musicians find stimulation for their compositions and arrangements in tango nuevo, flamenco, musette waltzes, Latin-American music and pop. Through their intensive dealings with all styles, they have developed a common, musical language.

As a child, Reentko Dirks wanted to learn percussion. This idea had to be dropped due to there being no teacher and this is the reason why he maltreated his guitar as a percussion instrument. His percussive way of playing and his intensive involvement with flamenco and Arabian music led to close co-operation with renowned ensembles and artists, and enabled him to perform in Europe and Asia .

Daniel Wirtz, an enthusiastic if not necessarily good amateur mandolin player and an interested hobby jazz guitarist, has dedicated the main part of his musical creativity and his greatest love to the concert guitar. Musicians such as Ralph Towner, Egberto Gismonti, The Beatles, Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin inspire his guitar playing and his own compositions.

“Dirks und Wirtz” can be experienced again and again also with the powerful-voiced singer, Annamateur, together with whom they received the German CABINET prize in 2006 for the CD “Annamateur and her Guitarists”.The duo has been distinguished at international competitions, with, amongst others, the special prize of the 1st EUROPEAN GUITAR AWARD 2006.

My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us; the world is full of it,
and you simply take as much as you require.
