The Ensemble 18+ chamber orchestra was established in 2009 by Czech conductor and harpsichord player Vojtěch Spurný with the concept of applying the criteria of so-called historically informed performance to an ensemble of modern instruments. However, work with historic sources and knowledge of period performance techniques is simply a basis not the final goal.
The final goal is a lively, novel and dynamic presentation of music on level with modern performance trends and the current level of musicological research as well as a conscious breaking down of the barriers that separate music from its listeners.

Members of the ensemble, whose average age does not exceed 30 years, wish to use their style of work, personal diligence and technical skills to differentiate themselves from standard orchestral routines and create an individual style of performance. Their choice of repertoire also corresponds to this desire and it is predominantly made up of infrequently performed or completely unknown
music dating from the 18th century, frequently of Czech provenience. The orchestra structure is variable, however, its core members are 10 string instruments, 5 wind instruments and a harpsichord player – conductor. This number precisely corresponds to the orchestra that Jiří Antonín Benda had in 1750 at the court in Gotha.

At the July 2009 Ensemble 18+ recorded their first CD „Symphony reloaded“ (produced by own label BIVA Records). The recording includes infrequently performed symphonies by five Czech composers from the second half of the 18th century 2 – F.X. Richter, J. Mysliveček, A. Kammel, J. Bárta and F. Rössler-Rosetti. In the case of the „Symphony g minor“ by the practically unknown author Josef Bárta, this is its first ever recording.

Ensemble 18+ cooperates with prominent Czech young soloist – violinist Gabriela Demeterová, singer Kateřina Kněžíková, clarinetist Ludmila Peterková or flutist Jan Ostrý.

My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us; the world is full of it,
and you simply take as much as you require.
