He studied at the Academy of Music in Munich under Prof. Franz Lehrndorfer and Prof. Edgar Krapp (organ) and with Roderich Kreile, Prof. Wolfram Menschick and Prof. Michael Gläser (choir direction). He graduated from the Academy with the A-exam in the field of evangelical church music, the diploma for organ education and the diploma for excellence, earned in master classes, the “Meisterklassendiplom”, also in the category organ. As an assistant in church music he observed a practical year at St. Anna in Augsburg, Germany, and – in order to round off his professional education – he took courses in improvisation with Prof. Hans Haselböck (Vienna), Prof. Gerd Wachowski (Frankfurt) and Prof. Wolfgang Seifen (Berlin). The “Alexander technique”, which he studies and uses sucessfully since several years, serves as an additional tool to further his skills.

Matthias Roth was twice awarded first price in the prestigious competition of “Jugend musiziert” (youth performs music), Munich, in the subjects “literature” and “improvisation”. Moreover, he received the “sponsored price for young talent” by the city of Germering as well as by the Rotary-Clubs Munich Land.

His concert activities as soloist an as continuo player have taken him so far to numerous countries, from Germany to Singapur, and his artistic work ist complemented by several CD-recordings. Since 1999 he holds the full-time position of cantor at the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Bad Reichenhall, where his duties also include those of cantor in the deanery Traunstein. As a composer he is well known, also as a sought after teacher; numerable times he was a member of the jury in the contest for the “Prof.-Fritz-Ruf sponsored price”, a competition to promote young talent.
On top of that he works as an officially recognized expert on church bells and is a member of the study group “leisure, recreation, tourism” of the Protestant Church in Bavaria.

My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us; the world is full of it,
and you simply take as much as you require.
