Emiko Uchiyama was born in Okayama / Japan in 1983. Emiko Uchiyama began her musical studies at the age of three receiving tuition on marimba and piano.

From a very early age she appeared as a soloist with many orchestras including the Tonkünstler-Orchestra Lower Austria, Osaka Philharmonic, Hong-Kong Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Metropolitan Police, the Sapporo Symphony and the Okayama Symphony orchestras.


In 2000, she received the 1st Prize at the Junior Percussion Competition in Japan. Ms Uchiyama also received the Keiko Abe Prize and was a finalist at the 3rd World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart in 2002. In 2005, she won 3rd Prize at the 4th World Marimba Competition Shanghai.

In 2006, she was invited by the Percussive Arts Society to perform alongside the world's leading marimba performer and composer, Keiko Abe, at PASIC -the society's annual convention.

Ms Uchiyama has started to study with Keiko Abe at the age of ten and she also studied with master marimbist Yoshihisa Mizuno. She graduated at the top of Keiko's class in 2006 at the well known Toho-Gakuen School of Music. She moved to study at Anton Bruckner Private University in Austria with Bogdan Bacanu, Leonhard Schmidinger and Josef Gumpinger where she graduated with Masters degree. She was also awarded the scholarship for the "First High Talented Scholarship" from Unisono. She is studying now with Prof. Dr. Peter Sadlo at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg.

In 2007, as a member of the Wave Duo, Ms Uchiyama received the 1st Prize at the Universal Marimba Competition Belgium with her duo partner, Vladimir Petrov. The duo was also awarded the Sabam Prize for the best interpretation of a set piece, the Keiko Abe Prize and received the Audience Award.

Her busy touring schedule has taken her to Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria, USA, Hong-Kong, South-Korea, China and all major Japanese cities where her concerts have been met with high critical acclaim. At the International Marimba Competition in Salzburg 2009 she was invited as guest jury member. She teached at the Marimba and Percussion Festival in Bulgaria and gives classes in Europe and Japan.
In addition to her performance activities, Classic Concert Records published her marimba duo album “Tango” in 2008 and quartet album “Aurora Borealis” in 2009. As a member of quartet, she recorded “Concerto for two Harpsichords” by J.S. Bach conducted by Peter Sadlo with the Baroque Orchestra “Salzburg Barock”. She released her first Solo CD named „Emiko“ in 2009.
